FAA Compliance
Problem
OUR PROBLEM: Beginning in 2011, SEA engaged with LandrySMS to meet FAA-required SRM facilitation services—under FAA Order 5200.11A. When COVID hit in 2020, the SRM process was challenged by restricting onsite meetings including two planned technical reviews and an SRM Panel Session.
Our Solution
The Team quickly adapted to create a virtual SRM preparation and delivery format through close coordination with the FAA, airport management, the design team, and stakeholders. We developed an optimized SRM process to prepare for the required SRM Panel Session Some of the best practices we’ve implemented to optimize the SRM process include conducting safety technical reviews, managing stakeholders and panel members through collaboration with the FAA and the aviation community, and offering a preparation session for SRM panel attendees to reduce time and optimize decision making. Our team successfully managed multiple sessions with more than 80 stakeholders and completed the FAA SRM process without compromising quality and compliance.
Project Highlights
  • Quickly adapted from onsite to virtual formats to complete SRM information collection, planning, and facilitating the SRM Panel Session
  • The virtual meeting format did not compromise safety or quality controls and met FAA requirements for approval
  • The virtual SRM Panel session format was recommended to the FAA for the future to reduce participant travel costs and time constraints
  • Frequent communication and collaboration among the teams allowed for a seamless and professional SRM Panel Session
Net Results
The client received a compliant SRM Panel, Report, and subsequent approval from the FAA. The project met both schedule and cost estimates.

Program Development
Problem
The Portland International (PDX) Operations team requested assistance to develop a comprehensive in-house SRM process to manage internal PDX and external FAA required Safety Risk Assessments (SRAs).
Our Solution
LandrySMS assessed, researched, and developed templates and processes for the PDX team to oversee and manage potential project safety risks of all Airport projects including operational changes. To validate the process, we applied the SRM processes to multiple FAA- and internally-driven projects and received approval from both FAA’s local Air Traffic Control Tower and FAA’s Regional Management teams.
Project Highlights
  • Developed a comprehensive SRM program for the PDX Operations team
  • Created templates and resources to support the SRM process based on industry and FAA best practices
  • Tested, proved, practiced, and implemented the SRM process with PDX
  • The SRM process has been operating successfully since it was rolled out in 2013
Net Results
PDX has integrated an SRM process to manage safety and risk for internal, external, and operational change projects since 2013. FAA has supported the process, and PDX has reduced construction and operational costs by performing safety reviews prior to project starts.
